GEOGRAPHY of Sint Maarten Saint Martin
The French side is 21 square miles. Its population is approximately
30,000. The Dutch side is 16 square miles. Its population is approximately
35,000. There are over 80 nationalities represented on the island.
COLOMBIER, St. Martin
The Colombier valley is filled with lush landscapes and pastures.
There you will find a quaint village with colorful traditional
caribbean houses.
FORT AMSTERDAM, Sint Maarten
This was the first, and most important Dutch Military outpost
in the Caribbean. It was constructed on Great Bay Harbor in 1931.
FORT ST. LOUIS, Saint Martin
The newly restored Fort St. Louis was built at the end of the
18th century during the reign of Louis XVI. Come and experience
a part of history and see a great view of Marigot and the lagoon
at the same time.
FORT WILLEM, St. Maarten
Another piece of St. Maarten St. Martin history. The Dutch took
over this site in 1816 and renamed it from Fort Trigge to Fort
Willem. Here there is an incredible panoramic view of neighboring
islands. The drive is pretty treacherous, so you might consider
walking.
GRAND CASE, St. Martin
Grand Case is a great place to find fabulous art and fine French,
Italian, and Creole cuisine. Most restaurants are open lunch as
well as dinner.
MARIGOT, St. Martin
This is the heart of the French side. The colonial architecture,
luxury boutiques, and fine French cuisine are not to be missed.
MUSEUMS
There are two museums on the island. The Dutch side holds the
Sint Maarten Museum. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday. The French
side holds the "On the trail of the Arawaks" Museum. The hours
are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through
Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Come and learn about
the history of St. Martin. Exhibitions change regularly.
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten
This is the heart of the Dutch side. The streets are filled with
wonderful shopping, restaurants, and several casinos. This is
a fun filled place that must not be missed.
PIC PARADIS, St. Martin
This is an incredible overlook. You can see a panoramic view of
the entire island. It is one of the highest points on the island.
You will be breathless with the beauty. The higher you go, the
worse the road gets, but most automobiles will make it all the
way to the glorious top!
PORT LA ROYALE, St. Martin
Port La Royale is located on Marigot Bay. It is a great shopping
place. You will find many native arts and crafts along with other
fine shops. It is also a great place to sit and relax on the terrace
of one of the many French bistros. |
